About Lacandon Jungle (Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules)

The Lacandon Jungle, contained largely within the Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules in the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas, is a vast expanse of tropical rainforest that represents some of the richest biodiversity in North America. Covering mountainous terrain that transitions to lowland jungle, the reserve spans rugged elevations and dense foliage, creating critical habitat for countless plant and animal species, including jaguars, tapirs, spider monkeys, and over 400 species of birds. The area was designated a biosphere reserve in 1978 to protect its unique ecosystems and indigenous cultural heritage, being home to Lacandon Maya communities who have traditionally coexisted with the forest. Outdoor enthusiasts visiting the reserve are drawn to its network of jungle trails that lead through primary rainforest, past waterfalls, and archaeological sites like the ancient Mayan ruins of Bonampak and Yaxchilan located nearby. Wildlife viewing, birdwatching, guided ecological tours, and camping in remote jungle settings are popular activities. The reserve also plays a vital role in regional ecological research and conservation efforts. Accessibility is limited, with many trails requiring local guides, preserving the wilderness atmosphere and providing authentic experiences in one of Mexico’s last extensive tropical rainforests. The Lacandon Jungle offers a rare opportunity to connect deeply with nature and indigenous culture in a biologically profound setting.
